Building Positive Habits To Stick
Easter is commonly regarded as a time for new beginnings, hope, opportunity and positivity. We all like to look forward to the days getting warmer, with more sunshine, raising up our energy levels and perhaps looking for new projects.
However it’s not always very easy to keep a strong focus and commitment to something, even though you may have very sincere intentions at the start. Often, just after a few attempts your interest and attention may gradually diminish – so how can we stick to new habits and build those desired results?
Behavioral scientists discovered that there's a reason for this pattern.
The good news is that, by following a few simple rules, building a habit and making it stick is not only possible but actually easier than you think.
Start very small
Begin your new habit with a tiny commitment that is easy to do.
For example, if your ultimate goal is to exercise every day, start with 5-10 minutes or even less.
Research has shown that willpower is like a muscle. You need to exercise it with small weights to be able to push the big ones.
Increase very slowly
It’s amazing how fast 1% increases add up. You need to resist the temptation to do too much too fast. Instead, leverage the power of compound and make baby increases to your habits. This will massively raise your chances of success.
Break it into chunks
Let’s take exercise as an example, even after practicing for a few weeks, our Ballet Body Sculpture Workout Class in one go might be challenging. To start you can break your exercise habit into chunks of 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the afternoon. Try using our online classes library and select shorter classes to start. It’ll help you keep up the momentum as your willpower muscle develops.
Never miss twice
Let’s be honest, you WILL break your new habit sooner or later. The key is to not give up. Not to stop because you missed once. A 2009 Study has shown that missing your habit once makes absolutely no difference for your long-term success. So get back on track. Don’t be perfect, be consistent!
One more thing...
Healthy habits are all about balance. More is not always better. Don’t go overboard. Take it easy. Start slow and keep it balanced.
